The Deduction Dispute Windows at Walmart, Target, Amazon, Kroger

Dispute windows for Walmart, Target, Amazon, and Kroger deductions in one table, with the portal and channel to file through for each.

Hand-drawn whiteboard-style reference table with four retailer columns labeled Walmart, Target, Amazon, and Kroger, each with a clock icon showing a different dispute deadline window, a stick figure holding a calendar with question marks, and a bold hand-lettered headline reading Dispute Deadlines
Short answer

Walmart gives up to two years to dispute most AP deductions through APDP, with shorter windows for chargebacks and shortages. Target allows 18 months prepaid and 9 months collect, through Synergy. Amazon chargebacks must be disputed within 30 days. Kroger gives 180 days through Supplier Connect, and reportedly 60 on an MCB fee.

Compiled from six independent vendor sources (SPS Commerce/SupplierWiki, iNymbus, Glimpse, Confido, Adbrew, Consulterce), cross-referenced against each other, August 2026.

A deduction just hit your remittance from Walmart, Target, Amazon, or Kroger, and the dollar amount is already off the check. If you handle deduction disputes or AR reconciliation for a $10M-$500M CPG supplier, you know what happens next isn’t automatic. The money stays gone unless you file. Every retailer runs its own clock on how long you get to do it.

So you go looking for the deadline. Walmart splits it into different windows for different deduction types inside one portal. Target measures from a different date depending on whether the shipment was prepaid or collect. Amazon gives you 30 days, full stop. Kroger gives you 180. Spend a week confirming the wrong number for one retailer, and a valid claim at another expires while you are still reading the wrong page. That second deduction does not come back either. It stays on the books as a loss you caught too late.

No retailer publishes its dispute deadlines in a format you can compare across programs. The windows are spread across four portals, described in four vocabularies, measured from four different starting points. That is the real problem: not that the deadlines are unreasonable, but that finding the right one for the right retailer takes longer than it should.

This page puts every window in one table, sourced retailer by retailer, so you check one place instead of four. Where the number comes from one source, the source is named. Where two or more agree, that is noted. Where a window has never been publicly described, the cell says so. If your own portal shows a different number, tell us and we will update the table.

What doesn’t the dispute-deadline table cover?

The table shows when the door closes. It does not show when to walk through it.

Two operational details matter more than the deadline itself.

The starting point varies by retailer. Walmart measures some windows from the invoice date and others from the posting date. Target measures from the document date on the remittance (prepaid) or the shipping date (collect). Amazon measures from the chargeback notification date. Kroger measures from the deduction date. Confusing which clock applies to a given deduction is how valid claims expire.

Filing early wins. SPS Commerce and Glimpse both describe dispute success rates declining as claims age. Documentation becomes harder to locate and retailer review teams deprioritize older cases. The deadline is the outer bound, not the target.

How long do you have to dispute a Walmart deduction?

Walmart’s dispute infrastructure runs through the Accounts Payable Dispute Portal (APDP) inside Retail Link, with one exception: OTIF and compliance chargebacks route through HighRadius instead, per Glimpse’s 2026 guide. Filing a compliance dispute in APDP gets nowhere if the claim type does not live there.

The two-year outer window for general AP deductions is generous by retail standards. The internal housekeeping timers are not. A draft dispute you start but do not finish expires after 14 days. A case Walmart flags “Supplier Action” auto-closes in 7 days if you do not respond. Neither timer resets the overall claim window. Both close the individual case, forcing you to restart if time remains.

14 days
before a draft dispute in APDP auto-expires unsubmitted. A 'Supplier Action' case auto-closes in 7 days without a response. Both are shorter than the overall dispute window and easier to miss.

Shortage disputes tend to resolve within a week of submission, per SPS Commerce and Glimpse. More complex AP deductions take 30 to 45 days for Walmart to review. That review time eats into your clock if you need to refile after a denial. For worked examples of what specific Walmart codes look like on a remittance, see the entries for shortage code 22, no-merchandise code 25, and price-difference code 10. The remittance advice guide covers how to read the document itself.

What is Target’s dispute deadline for shortages?

Target splits its dispute windows by shipment type, not by deduction family. Prepaid shipments get 18 months from the document date on the check remittance. Collect shipments get 9 months from the shipping date. A supplier shipping both types to the same retailer runs two separate clocks.

Disputes go through Synergy. Compliance violations have a separate, earlier gate: a two-week exemption window through POL Service Now before the violation converts to a chargeback. Once that two-week window closes, the chargeback posts and the standard Synergy dispute path applies.

5 business days
to respond when Target returns a case as 'awaiting information from vendor.' Miss it and the case auto-denies, regardless of how much time remains on the overall dispute window.

Target also caps re-disputes. Per SPS Commerce’s 2025 disputing guide, a fifth dispute on the same deduction triggers financial fines. That is a hard limit, not a deadline, but the effect is the same. The Target SIFR chargeback entry covers one of the compliance violations that feeds into this dispute path, and the Target vendor chargebacks guide covers the full VC code system and penalty structure behind all of them.

How long do you have to dispute an Amazon chargeback?

Amazon’s 30-day dispute window from the chargeback notification date is the shortest of the four retailers and the best documented. Adbrew, Consulterce, and SPS Commerce all converge on the same number.

The dispute path runs through Vendor Central’s Operational Performance dashboard. Select the chargeback, click Dispute, attach documentation. No separate portal, no routing split by deduction type, no exemption window before the chargeback posts. One channel, one deadline.

30 days
from chargeback notification to file. Amazon closes the case with no appeal option after the window expires, per Adbrew. Some chargeback types allow a second dispute after an initial denial, per Consulterce, but the second-attempt window is not described consistently across sources.
Source: Adbrew, Consulterce

Amazon publishes more of its chargeback program publicly than any other retailer in this table. That is why the 30-day number carries the highest source agreement here. It’s also the number most likely to match what you see in your own Vendor Central dashboard. The Amazon ASN Accuracy chargeback entry covers the most common chargeback type in detail, including the sub-types and evidence checklist.

Where do you file a Kroger deduction dispute, and how long do you have?

Kroger’s 180-day window covers standard AP deductions, per SPS Commerce and Confido. Disputes now go through Supplier Connect, the PRGX-built platform that replaced the Lavante portal in late 2025. Historical Lavante cases were migrated across, and access moved to Partner Pass single sign-on. Guidance published before mid-2026 still names Lavante, so treat it as stale on portal mechanics.

The 180 days is not universal within Kroger. An MCB compliance fee reportedly allows 60 days from the issue date and files through the Kroger Supplier Hub instead, per ClearChain. That is the shortest window on this page after Amazon’s, and it appears on the same remittance as deductions carrying three times the runway.

One detail SPS Commerce and Confido both flag: once a dispute is submitted, you cannot modify it. Documentation has to be complete before the claim goes in. Walmart’s APDP allows a draft to remain open for 14 days before expiring, where Kroger’s platform has no draft state and submission is final.

180 vs 60 days
Kroger's standard AP window is 180 days, but an MCB compliance fee reportedly allows only 60 and routes through a different portal. Reconciling Kroger on a single clock is how the compliance fees expire.

Kroger’s dispute rules stay the least publicly documented of the four retailers here, which is why the Kroger supplier deductions guide breaks out the numeric code list, the ORAD and MCB compliance fees, and the Supplier Connect path in full.

What to do with this table

Bookmark this table. The point of a reference table is that you do not have to remember the numbers. You can also download a free printable version of both tables as a Google Doc, formatted for printing and pinning next to whoever runs your disputes.

When a deduction hits your remittance, look up the code on the deduction-code hub to understand what it claims. Then come back here to find out how long you have and where to file. Before you file, build the deduction evidence pack: the six documents that turn a dispute from a complaint into a case. If you want a structured weekly check that catches gaps before the dispute window starts shrinking, see the Monday morning deduction triage.

This table covers when a dispute closes, not the compliance rules that generate the deduction in the first place. For a retailer that layers its own violation system or routing guide on top, see the Target vendor chargebacks guide and Home Depot’s routing guide compliance guide.

If the deductions are systemic rather than isolated, the OTIF calculator sizes the cost of the pattern before you commit resources to disputing each line individually. The Deduction Census tells you whether your overall rate is high for your revenue band.

If you spot a deadline in your own portal that does not match what is listed here, email us. Corrections from practitioners are how reference tables stay accurate. Every update will be sourced and dated.

No dispute window on this page has been confirmed against a retailer’s own portal documentation. All numbers are drawn from the vendor sources linked inline throughout. If a figure here does not match your portal, the portal wins.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I have to dispute a Walmart deduction?
It depends on the type. Up to two years for general AP deductions, 12 months for shortage claims, and 15 to 30 days for chargebacks, all through APDP per SPS Commerce and Glimpse. OTIF compliance chargebacks route through HighRadius instead, with a window closer to 30 days.
What is Target's dispute deadline for shortages?
Target's AP deduction window is 18 months from the document date on the check remittance for prepaid shipments. Collect shipments get 9 months from the shipping date, per SPS Commerce and iNymbus. Disputes go through Synergy, and a case returned as awaiting documentation auto-denies after 5 business days without a response.
Can I dispute an Amazon chargeback more than once?
Some chargeback types allow a second dispute after the first rejection, per Adbrew and Consulterce. The initial dispute must be filed within 30 days of the chargeback notification in Vendor Central. Sources differ on whether there is a hard cap on attempts.
Where do I file a Kroger deduction dispute?
You file through Supplier Connect, the PRGX-built platform that replaced the Lavante portal in late 2025, per iNymbus. The standard window is 180 days from the deduction date, per SPS Commerce and Confido. An MCB compliance fee is the exception, reportedly allowing 60 days and filing through the Kroger Supplier Hub instead. Once submitted, changes are not allowed, so documentation should be complete before filing.
Do these deadlines ever change?
Yes. Retailers update programs, rename portals, and adjust windows. This table was last reviewed in August 2026 and will be updated as sources report changes. If a deadline listed here does not match what you see in your own portal, let us know so we can correct it.
